Freedom of Education examines the history and legacy of school policing in New York City, tracing implementation, and how the presence of law enforcement has impacted students and schools. A major theme within the work is the school to prison pipeline, how learning institutions have adopted procedures associated with carceral environments. The work reflects the way school policing has disproportionately affected BIPOC children, who make up the majority of New York City public school students. At the same time, the work acknowledges shifts and corrections made over the years. Viewers are asked to reconsider safety and surveillance as a part of education in the United States.
